Application Field

The DAC3164IRGCR is a high-performance, fast-speed digital-to-analog converter (DAC) featuring a voltage-mode output and a SPI compatible serial interface. This integrated device is designed to provide superior performance, flexibility, and ease of use in data acquisition and control applications. The DAC3164IRGCR can be used in a variety of applications including: high-speed data acquisition, medical instrumentation, precision automation and robotics, motion control, sensorless control, and high-voltage power supply design.

Working Principle

The DAC3164IRGCR is a 12-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) featuring a voltage-mode output and a SPI compatible serial interface. It provides superior performance, flexibility, and ease of use in data acquisition and control applications. The DAC3164IRGCR operates on a standard 5volt power supply and includes on-board voltage references. The DAC3164IRGCR utilizes the serial peripheral interface (SPI) with important signaling and communication lines. The device is enabled by the chip select (CS) line, the serial clock (SCLK) line, the serial data input (Sdi) line, and the serial data output (Sdo) line. The serial data output (Sdo) line is bi-directional and provides an asynchronous master/slave serial data-transfer interface. This allows small, 8-bit bytes of data to be quickly sent to and from the DAC3164IRGCR. Once the DAC3164IRGCR is enabled by the CS line, it looks for serial data from the Sdi line. This data is accumulated on the device, with the synchronization being provided by the SCLK line. The DAC3164IRGCR continuously monitors the Sdi line for any new incoming signals. The MSB (most significant bit) of the data transferred to the DAC3164IRGCR is the start bit. The value of this bit sets the mode of operation of the DAC3164IRGCR:• Start Bit = 0 --> Preamble. • Start Bit = 1 --> Execute Mode.In the Preamble mode, the DAC3164IRGCR reads the 8 bits of information following the start bit and stores this data in an internal register. This internal register is then sent as a response on the Sdo line by the device.In the Execute mode, the DAC3164IRGCR reads the 8 bits of information following the start bit, converts the data into voltage according to the predefined scale, and outputs the voltage on the voltage output (VOUT) pin. The DAC3164IRGCR also provides an on-board reference and allows for the setting of the full-scale voltage range through an external voltage source. In addition to the serial data interface, the DAC3164IRGCR also includes an integrated voltage reference and programmable full-scale output voltage range. The integrated DAC3164IRGCR voltage reference allows for the setting of the DAC3164IRGCR’s full-scale output voltage range. The DAC3164IRGCR can also be programmed to accept an external voltage reference, allowing for customization of the DAC3164IRGCR’s full-scale output voltage range.The DAC3164IRGCR can be used in a wide range of high-speed data acquisition, medical instrumentation, precision automation and robotics, motion control, sensorless control and high-voltage power supply design applications.
