The DAC5672EVM is an evaluation module for Digital to Analog Converters (DACs). This evaluation module serves as a development and testing platform for a variety of applications where an interface between analog and digital systems is required. The DAC5672EVM is a 16-bit high-performance digital-to-analog converter (DAC) using TI\'s patented UCD3138 high-speed DAC. It features the following: low distortion, low noise, low total harmonic distortion + noise, and a low phase error over full temperature and supply ranges. Configured with a single-supply voltage of 3.3 V, the DAC5672EVM can operate from -40°C to +125°C. This temperature range makes it well suited for automotive applications.
The DAC5672EVM circuit is made up of the UCD3138, an 8-bit I2C bus slave that provides the 16-bit conversion resolution, an I2C EEPROM for storing various calibration codes, an on-board voltage reference, and internal power supply management. It also features an over-temperature monitor, temperature compensation, external fault detection and a range of compensation settings for system optimization.
The UCD3138 is based on a delta-sigma modulator architecture wherein DAC operation is based upon the ratio of current flowing through the parallel-connected resistors. When a voltage is applied at one of the inputs, it causes a current to flow through the resistor and to the output. This current is then used to drive the output voltage. The output voltage is proportional to the applied voltage and the resistor value. This technology enables DACs to provide an accurate and consistent output with minimal distortion.
