Diodes, and consequently those of the bridge rectifier type, are used in the DC power supply of most electronic appliances and systems. A bridge rectifier is an electronic circuit which converts AC (alternating current) input into DC (direct current) output, using four or more diodes with the output being taken from the anode or cathode connections of these diodes. In the case of a 4-diode bridge circuit, two of the anodes are connected either side of the input AC source, whilst the other two diodes are connected such that the remaining two AC cycles are reversed and the output is taken from the connecting node of the two cathodes.
DB107S-HF is a bridge rectifier constructed from four ultra-fast diodes encapsulated in a single package. The product is designed for use in applications requiring a high-frequency rectifier, such as those used in switched mode power supplies (SMPS).
The DB107S-HF offers a maximum forward continuous current of 1A, a maximum reverse voltage of 25V and a peak pulse current of 5A. The 4 diodes are available as two pairs, each with a maximum forward voltage drop of 540mV, an on-state resistance of 0.7 Ohms and a reverse recovery time of 1µs. The device is designed to operate at junction temperatures up to +150°C with a thermal resistance of 80°C/W.
In operation, the DB107S-HF converts AC current input to DC current output by rectifying the AC cycle, with the diodes acting as independent rectification elements and the rectification occurring at both ends of the AC current waveform. The four diodes allow for both positive and negative cycles to be rectified, providing an essentially DC output. The bridge rectifier is made up of four components connected in an arrangement which circulates current flow, allowing the output to be taken from any of the four devices making up the bridge.
The switch mode power supply (SMPS) typically uses several control devices and an AC voltage source. The AC voltage is rectified by the bridge rectifier and is then filtered by capacitors.
