Introduction
The DC1185B-A is an evaluation board for DC/DC and AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS. Working Principle
The DC1185B-A works in three different switching modes. The first mode, illustrated by the simplified circuit diagram below, is the off-line switching mode, in which the majority of the switching components are connected in parallel with the AC line. The diode bridge rectifies the AC to DC, while the two transistor switches form a basic resonant circuit. The voltage is then applied to the output buffer, and the output is taken from the buffer. The step-down switching mode example shown below uses a buck regulator circuit, which is a boost regulator with a feedback loop. The voltage is divided using resistors RB1 and RA3, and the resulting voltage is compared with the output voltage of the power supply to determine its operation. The feedback loop works to keep the voltage at the desired value.
In the third mode, the forward converter, a diode bridge rectifies the AC to DC. The DC voltage is then applied to the booster transistor; this transistor is set in parallel to the transformer primary winding. The transformer with the secondary winding feeds the current to the rectifier diodes, which convert the alternating current into direct current with the help of the capacitor. The resulting DC voltage is then applied to the output for storage or use.
