DC1227A is an evaluation board from TI for studying non-isolated DC/DC and AC/DC SMPS capabilities. This board provides a unique platform for understanding and exploring broader ways to utilize different off-line power topologies. It comes with both step-down, and step-up converter control solutions, each of which can provide isolated power using the latest available semi-insulating GaN technology. The DC1227A board contains a wide range of components offering a variety of operating conditions and features, making it suitable for various application scenarios. The board features two integrated non-isolated converters, a >95% efficient full-bridge LLC converter with 20A peak current handling capability, and a quasi-resonant flyback converter with peak current handling capability of 10A.

To control the converters, the DC1227A evaluation board features PMBus-based real-time power monitoring and control capabilities. Each converter contains a PFC stage with integrated PMBus-enabled feedback loops, allowing users to quickly monitor and tune the PMBus cables. Additionally, the board supports wide input voltage and output range, ranging from 4.5V to 50V and from 0V to 19.9V, respectively. The board supports adjustable output voltage from 0.7V to 95.2V, adjustable switching frequency of up to 600kHz, and wide dynamic load range up to 90%.

As for the working principle, the DC1227A has two main stages that use the power from the supply to generate output power: the active PFC stage and the synchronous converter stage. The active PFC stage includes a series of inductors and capacitors, preferably connected in a cascade-parallel arrangement, that feed the DC/DC converter stage with a steady DC input voltage. After the input voltage reaches a desired level, the DC/DC converter stage takes over. The DC/DC converter stage comprises a high-efficiency synchronous rectifier and a buck transfer switch for generating the output voltage. The power drawn from the supply is switched in a repeating pattern, allowing the buck transfer switch to generate an output voltage.

Due to its embedded isolated power-supply capabilities, the DC1227A is suitable for integrated applications such as point-of-load (POL) power supplies and automotive applications. It’s also an ideal board for exploring the possibilities of GaN-based engineers. With its significantly reduced power loss and wide range of power control features, the DC1227A is definitely an efficient and convenient way to experiment with offline power topologies.
