The DC1297B Evaluation Board is a half-brick off-line switcher designed for evaluating the performance of the LM25650 series of power regulators. The DC1297B includes protection for output overcurrent and overvoltage, current foldback and thermal, as well as protection of input overvoltage. With a wide input range of 4.5V to 18V and an output current of 12A, the DC1297B is particularly suitable for low power applications which require a high input voltage with a wide dynamic range.

The DC1297B is based on the recently introduced LM25650 series of high-efficiency, non-isolated power regulators from Analog Devices. The LM25650 series utilizes a novel buck-boost architecture to provide superior output voltage regulation and transient performance over a wide input voltage range. It is designed to operate from input voltages as low as 2.5V and as high as 25V. High efficiency and low output ripple are further enhanced by the combination of synchronization, PWM modulation and pulse frequency modulation.

The DC1297B is designed to operate efficiently over a wide input voltage range. When operated at 12V input, the average efficiency is greater than 96%. This efficiency means that the power dissipated in the board as heat can be minimized, reducing the need for elaborate cooling systems. The wide operating temperature range makes it suitable for use in a variety of applications, including automotive, which requires efficient operation in both hot and cold environments.

In addition to high efficiency and wide operating temperature range, the DC1297B features both hysteretic and peak current-mode control to optimize efficiency and transient response. The hysteretic control loop regulates the output voltage at a constant minimum current level when the output voltage is below the regulation limit set by the user. The peak current-mode control provides a smooth transition between the hysteretic and current limit controls when the output voltage exceeds the regulation limit.

Protection features of the DC1297B include protection for output overcurrent and overvoltage, current foldback and thermal, as well as protection of the input overvoltage. The output overcurrent and overvoltage protection prevents the device from exceeding programmed limits, while the current foldback and thermal protection limits the device’s total power dissipation. The input overvoltage protection helps to protect the device from damage due to input transients.
