DC398A-B is an evaluation board designed for the development and testing of off-line isolated step-down DC/DC (direct current/direct current) and AC/DC (alternating current/direct current) switching power supplies used in medical and industrial applications. The board includes a DC/DC isolated power converter operating from a rectified AC input, a separate 5V control power supply, and two auxiliary AC/DC power supplies.
Operating Principle: DC398A-B employs a flyback-transformers topology to convert the input voltage. An IC regulator and its associated components are used to accurately regulate the output voltage and power, and to provide protection against overload and short circuits. On the primary side of the flyback transformer, an MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor) is used as the main switch which controls the on-off state for the transformer windings. On the secondary side, a linear regulator is employed to provide precise voltage regulation, although an error amplifier may be used for more accurate voltage regulation.
The rectified AC input voltage is fed directly to the primary winding of the flyback transformer. When the MOSFET is switched on, it will create a magnetic field in the primary winding, which will induce an EMF in the secondary winding. This induced current is rectified by the diode connected to the secondary winding, and the output is then filtered and regulated with the linear regulator to provide the exact voltage and power required.
