DC526A is an evaluation board that is designed to assess and measure the performance of a number of off-line Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) types such as the DC/DC and the AC/DC type. The board is designed to function in both single and double ended power supply type applications.
The board is composed of a main board, power supply board, four potentiometers (rimming) and a Digital Multi-Meter (DMM) board. The main board is designed to house the AC/DC type SMPS and the DC/DC type SMPS components. It also provides the necessary mounting holes to facilitate the connection of the power supply board to the main board. The power supply board contains the main components such as the waveform generator, oscilloscope, dual power switch, tri-state filter and the control section. Each board contains two LED monitors which help in monitoring the activity of the power supply.
The DC/DC type of the DC526A has a working principle that is quite similar to the AC/DC type, it is basically a DC voltage regulator. The power circuit consists of a controlled, switched-mode power converter and a rectified, filtered DC voltage source. The power circuit takes in the input voltage and converts it into a regulated DC voltage, using the power converter. The power converter advantageously offers improved energy efficiency, by switching the voltage between different levels, in order to avoid the voltage being wasted.
The AC/DC type of the DC526A functions in a slightly different way. It holds the inductor in such a way that it forms a continuous flow of the load current into the output without any interruption. The voltage is then regulated by adjusting the inside timing of the switching transistors. This type of DC regulator is used in applications where there is a requirement for more precise voltage regulation.
The DC526A also consists of four potentiometers (rimming) which are used to control the operating parameters of the power supply. The potentiometers are used to adjust the voltage, current, feedback and frequency. The adjustable range of the voltage can be set between 0.5 volts and 5.0 volts. The adjustable range of the current can be set between 0.2 amps and 3.0 amps. The adjustable range of the feedback is between 0 and 10 volts. The adjustable range of the frequency is between 50 and 100 kHz and can be changed using the knob provided in the board.
The DC526A can be used for measuring, testing and monitoring several off-line SMPS type circuits. It is ideal for developing and testing DC/DC and AC/DC type SMPSs. Moreover, the board is user friendly and provides a comprehensive set of features which allow users to easily use it for their power supply testing and monitoring applications. This board is a great tool for engineers and technicians who need to measure and optimize the performance of off-line power supplies and Switched Mode Power Supplies.
