The DC670A is an evaluation board designed for testing DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS products. It is a useful tool for the development, assessment and debugging of a range of power electronics products. The board acts as a stand-alone switch-mode power supply (SMPS) controller, offering users an adjustable output power range between 0.4 and 40W, adjustable feedback voltage, contactless control via two independent analog control lines, pulse-width-modulated waveform control, a powerloss sensing pin and temperature sensing.
The DC670A has two sections: a primary (DC-DC converter) and a secondary (regulator). The primary section comprises of a high-efficiency DC-DC converter and a power line sense block, providing an output of around 15V. The regulator section provides an adjustable ranging between 4 and 40V that is further regulated by the sense block. The board is equipped with two independent analog control lines to allow for a wide range of PWM waveforms. Additionally, it is equipped with a powerloss sensing pin and a temperature sensing circuit.
The working principle of the DC670A board is relatively simple. It takes input power (usually 12V) and converts it into low voltage DC (15V). This is then sent to the regulator section, which regulates the output voltage to the desired level (4 to 40V). The regulator section also features contactless control via two independent analog control pins. The regulator makes use of a pulse-width-modulated signal to regulate the output voltage. This enables the board to handle dynamic loads effectively. It also has a power loss sensing pin which provides protection from high current transient or short-circuit events.
The board also includes a temperature sensing circuit that is used to detect excessive device temperature and shut down the system in time to prevent damage. This thermal protection is especially important in cases where the power consumed by the circuit exceeds the maximum rating, or when an extremely unstable load is connected to the board.
