Thermal Cutoffs, commonly also referred to as Thermal Fuses, are safety devices used to automatically disconnect the flow of an electrical current once the temperature surrounding the device reaches a pre-determined threshold. This thermal protection device is designed to act as a fail-safe guard for prevent damage caused by excess temperature, particularly in the event of an electrical overload. This protection is especially important in cases where the temperature setting on the device cannot be conveniently adjusted, or in cases where temperature-sensitive materials are involved, such as when using plastic components.

The DFP10112 Thermal Cutoff device is a high-performance, energized-open, thermal switch. This device is rated to 120VAC/DC and designed to monitor the temperature of circuits and/or components in the event of an electrical malfunction or an invalid temperature setting. This highly reliable device is bi-metallic (composed of two dissimilar metals) and features a unique detection mechanism that is relatively impervious to dust or dirt as well as to wide temperature range swings. Once the temperature rises above the pre-determined threshold, the switch closes the circuit, breaking the current flow and reducing the possibility of an electric shock to personnel or material damage.

The DFP10112 thermal cutoff device has a number of advantages when compared to other thermal protection devices in its class. It is engineered for high accuracy and repeatability and is UL recognized and CSA approved giving it a major advantage in terms of safety. It also offers wide circuit opening temperature rating up to 150C and a very fast thermal response time of 2 seconds or less. In addition, the device is inherently insensitive to strong magnetic forces and features a variety of mounting options, with a terminal-to-bobbin distance of 15mm in the standard configuration. The DFP10112 is designed for a wide range of applications, including power transistors, AC/DC switches, motors, oil control valves, power tools, etc. Moreover, the DFP10112 is temperature adjustable by varying the current load on the device.

The working principle of DFP10112 thermal cutoff devices is based on its bi-metallic construction. Unlike the thermal protection provided by a simple resistor, wherein the resistance of the resistor increases with the increase in temperature, the DFP10112 device operates through the differing rates of thermal expansion and contraction of two dissimilar metals that are separated by a thin foil in the bi-metallic strip. When the device is heated, the rate at which one metal expands is greater than the other. This difference in rates causes the bi-metallic strip to change shape and, when it reaches a pre-determined temperature, the switch closes the circuit. As the temperature falls below the pre-determined threshold, the bi-metallic strip returns to its original shape, re-opening the circuit.

The DFP10112 thermal cutoff devices are designed to be used in a wide variety of power electronics applications. These devices provide reliable over-temperature protection to motors, power transistors, AC/DC switches, and oil control valves, among many other components. In terms of safety, the device is UL recognized and CSA approved with a very fast thermal response time of 2 seconds or less, making it an effective protector of personnel and equipment. In addition, the device is adjustable in terms of temperature and features a variety of mounting options. With its bi-metallic construction and precise design, the DFP10112 is a reliable and cost-effective thermal cutoff device for a wide range of applications.
