Introduction

The DS1086Z is a low-power, low-jitter and highly integrated Frequency Synthesizer that integrates high performance oscillator and synthesizer. The DS1086Z is designed to support a wide variety of clock and timing applications.

Application fields

The DS1086Z frequency synthesizer is ideal for a variety of clock and timing applications including but not limited to, networks and telecommunications, automotive/industrial, mobile base stations, GPS, digital video/audio and FPGA systems. Its key features include high-precision, low-jitter and low-power operations.

One of the primary advantages of the DS1086Z is its integrated oscillator, which provides output frequencies from 1 KHz to 150 MHz. The integrated oscillator offers excellent frequency stability in the application environment, from -30 to +85 °C. The corresponding output structures include 6 LVDS outputs, 3 LVCMOS outputs and a single differential output; all these with configurable output frequencies and duty cycles.

Working Principle

The DS1086Z utilizes a fractional-N frequency synthesis system. The fractional-N architecture contains two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) that are combined to produce frequencies with high resolution. In addition, a phase-locked loop (PLL) is used to synchronize output frequency with a reference input.

The main operation of the DS1086Z starts with an external reference frequency, from a crystal oscillator. Then, the DS1086Z divides-by-N to generate the reference frequency for the PLL. This reference clock signal is fed to the phase detector, which compares the reference and output frequencies. The output frequency is adjusted to match the reference frequency, thus providing fast locking and excellent frequency resolution. The output frequency is further divided and then fed to the VCOs for frequency generation. The PLL is locked with the reference frequency and the VCOs output a signal at the desired frequency.

Further, the loop filter eliminates the VCO frequency ripple, providing a steady and low-noise frequency. The loop filter is adjustable and provides selectable bandwidths to provide faster locking, while allowing smooth changes in output frequencies. Moreover, the output signals of the DS1086Z can be further divided or multiplied by an external circuit to generate the exact output frequency.

The DS1086Z also integrates several other features. It contains a power management system to reduce static power consumption and a dual-level calibration system to minimize the effects of temperature variation on performance. This integrated system can be used for a variety of clock and timing applications, from synchronization networks to telecommunications systems.
