The DS1088LU-50+ is a low-cost, low-jitter, low-power frequency-locked loop (FLL) clock synthesizer designed to generate frequency-stabilized sample clocks. The FLL is designed to use a 32.768 kHz reference clock to generate sample clocks of up to 100MHz. The device is optimized for use in applications such as cell phones or digital television where precise timing and power efficiency are essential. Additionally, the device can be used for a variety of networking, telecommunications and medical instrumentation applications.
The FLL clock synthesizer is based on a Phase Lock Loop (PLL) method of frequency synthesis and frequency control. A PLL is a combination of phase detector, loop filter and voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that is used to generate an output signal with a precise frequency by comparing the phase of two signals, and then adjusting the PLL’s parameters to synchronize them. The goal of a PLL is to lock in a precise frequency from the reference signal, while still allowing the PLL to track any changes in the reference signal’s frequency.
To implement a PLL, the first step is to generate a reference signal that can be used as the basis for the lock loop. The reference signal of the DS1088LU-50+ is a 32.768 kHz quartz crystal oscillator. The reference signal is fed into the PLL’s phase detector, which compares the phases of the reference signal and the feedback signal. The result of the comparison is used to fine-tune the loop filters and the VCO in order to achieve the desired output frequency.
