Working Principle
At its core, the DS1090U-2/V+T range of ICs are essentially a synchronous PLL, also known as an S-PLL. S-PLLs essentially comprise a low-phase-noise voltage controlled oscillator, a loop filter and divider blocks that are connected in a single regulated loop. The low-noise oscillator generates a signal at a rate exactly proportional to the incoming reference signal while the blocks present in the loop filter hold the loop in synchronous synchronization with the reference signal. The S-PLLs also employ a unique combination of programmable settings, digital signal processing and voltage-controlled-oscillator block.
The voltage control oscillator in the loop is configured such that it is capable of producing frequencies very accurately in a range that covers the majority of applications. Additionally, the device features a non-volatile programmable lock detector, which makes it much easier for the user to make sure that the PLL is actually receiving reference signals and is constantly in synchronous synchronization.
