Real-time clocks (RTCs) are used in computers, smartphones, and other mobile devices to keep track of the time set by the user. They are also widely used in embedded systems for precise timekeeping, such as in avionics, medical equipment, and automation systems. DS1375T+T&R RTCs are an example of high performance RTCs that provide both precise timekeeping and temperature sensing functions.
DS1375T+T&R devices are a range of low power, low-cost, and highly precise Real-Time Clocks with both Temperature and RTC Functionality. This unique combination allows for highly accurate timekeeping and temperature sensing functions in one package. The devices are ideal for applications such as industrial automation, medical/healthcare, and mobile/wireless applications where precise timekeeping and environmental sensing is needed.
DS1375T+T&R devices feature a +-1 PPM accuracy and a wide operating temperature range from -20°C to +85°C. The devices are available in a 16-pin surface mount package with SPI and I2C interface options. The COM-2104 and COM-2106 versions are available with a built-in temperature sensor. The COM-2102 and COM-2104 versions also offer an external temperature sensor for improved accuracy.
The devices feature a built-in crystal and integrated Power-Fail Detection Circuit (PFDC) to ensure proper timekeeping even during power cycles. The devices also feature two 32-bit programmable general-purpose timers which allow the devices to count intervals and to generate periodic interrupts. Additional features include alarm functions, power management, and power fail detection. A low power 2.5V supply voltage allows the devices to be used in battery-powered applications.
The working principle behind the devices is simple. The internal oscillator is connected to the crystal, which oscillates at a precise frequency. The frequency is used to keep track of time and will not drift due to environmental conditions. The real-time clock also has an internal power-fail detection circuit which will resume operation when power is restored. The internal registers provide the time data which can be accessed by the application through I2C or SPI communication protocols.
The applications for DS1375T+T&R devices are virtually limitless.
