DS1501W+ is a new generation of real-time clock (RTC) ICs which make use of a quartz crystal and temperature compensation ICs in order to provide a precise and reliable clock source. The DS1501W+ RTC is a highly integrated, low-power device (1.2V to 3.6V operation) that implements all of the functions necessary to support a wide range of applications while minimizing power consumption. It combines a quartz crystal oscillator, temperature compensation ICs, and a real-time clock calibration register in a single 8-pin Plastic Dual In Line (PDIP) package. The device is designed to operate in a wide temperature range from -40°C to 85°C.
DS1501W+ is ideal for timekeeping applications such as timing applications for industrial, automotive and telecommunication systems. It features an extremely accurate timekeeping, an automatic temperature compensation for timekeeping accuracy, and a 32-bit calendar (up to year 2599). It also contains a programmable alarm and a power-on reset feature that guarantees the timekeeping accuracy during normal power supply voltage fluctuations.
The DS1501W+ RTC has three types of input formats including binary-coded decimal (BCD), yy/MM/dd, and yyyy/MM/dd. The device is powered by two external pin capacitors; one at the crystal node to provide a high-impedance buffer, and the other at the VDD pin to filter any noise present on the power supply line. The crystal oscillator circuit uses a crystal optimized for the best performance in 32.768KHz. The output frequency can be programmed, if necessary, by varying the external capacitor at the oscillator node.
The DS1501W+ RTC has three operating modes including normal, temperature control, and automatic calibration. In normal mode, the device runs in its fast operation mode where the accuracy is maintained by a feedback shift-register (FSR) divider. In temperature control mode, the device is allowed to be adjusted by the temperature compensation ICs to reduce the deviation from the quartz crystal resonancefrequency; this mode is used for low-cost applications. In automatic calibration mode, the device automatically calibrates itself using the temperature compensation ICs, resulting in the highest accuracy.
The DS1501W+ RTC is an advanced device that offers both high accuracy and low power consumption.
