The DS1556WP-120IND is a real time clock (RTC) designed by Maxim Integrated, a leader in the world of integrated design. Working principle: The working principle of the DS1556WP-120IND is based on updating the elapsed time between calendar (Y, M, D) and clock (h, m, s) representations on a defined period. This period can be set by the user and it is used to update the register inside the chip.
The chip is designed with two types of interrupt sources which are used to update the time and date from an external source. The user can select the type of interrupt source from the internal register. The sources include an external oscillator, an external pulse or an internal pulse generated by the clock’s oscillator.
The actual time is counted based on the number of oscillations per second of the clock’s oscillator or on the frequency of the external oscillator. The time is stored into the RTC registers when the interrupt is triggered, and the device will track the time and update the time registers accordingly.
The clock also features a programmable alarm that can generate an interrupt once a specified date and time is reached. The alarm can be programmed to produce a periodic interrupt on a defined interval with a maximum interval of 65535 seconds.
