The DS1511W is a highly efficient real-time clock (RTC) device from Dallas Semiconductor\'s Dallas Series 15 Real Time Clock/Calendar family. This device is used to control time and date in a digital system over an extended period of time. The DS1511W provides an accurate clock/calendar and 26 bytes of NV SRAM with a power-on reset and a back-up battery. These features make this device an ideal choice for embedded applications such as computer, process controller, or printer control, or applications requiring an extended battery life.
The DS1511W RTC device is based on a 32kHz crystal. This oscillator is used to derive the 60 Hz frequencies for the internal clock and calendar counters. The Timekeeper Registers are configured to count hours, minutes, and seconds in Binary Coded Decimal (BCD). The Calendar Register is also configured as a BCD format as it stores the month, day, year, time zone, and century. These registries keep count at a rate of 30.5 microseconds per second, which makes the accuracy of the time and date very accurate.
The DS1511W provides a power-on reset (POR) circuit and a battery-back-up PROM circuit. The power-on reset ensures that the device operates correctly when power is applied and the battery back-up PROM provides an uninterrupted power source for the device during low or no power conditions. The battery back-up will keep the clock/calender operating for approximately three years using a CR2032 battery or two years using an AC powered adapter.
