It contains an accurate quartz crystal oscillator, a low-power CMOS integrated circuit with clock/calendar functions and lithium battery circuitry to NiMH battery support. The device can provide a real-time clock reference to enable more accurate data-acquisition system timing, in comparison to a traditional CMOS oscillator circuit. The device is capable of using internal clock calibration to synchronize to an external time reference, and is also capable of fully operating on its own.

The DS1685Q-5 Real Time Clock includes a one-time-programmable nonvolatile memory. This memory allows you to store the actual time of day and can be updated annually via software. In addition, the device also includes adjustable crystal trimming capability and an optional built-in temperature sensor.

The DS1685Q-5 Real Time Clock has a simple standby circuit that is designed to enable the simplest of timekeeping operations. When the power is turned OFF, this circuit keeps the data memory alive, even if the power remains off for extended periods. This standby circuit allows the device to keep accurate time, even without the presence of an external power source or a battery.

The DS1685Q-5 Real Time Clock can be used with a variety of industrial systems, and boasts accuracy to within one second per month, 14-bit resolution to the hour, minute and seconds, and the capability of operating with industrial temperatures up to +105°C. It is programmed through the I2C interface and is available in multiple package configurationsand two temperature ranges (extended and standard).
