The I2C/SPI digital interface allows the DS1685QN-5+ to be quickly programmed with a host controller as well as possessing a variety of powerful options such as an integrated watch crystal and true battery backup. By incorporating the highest precision and sophistication with a miniature package size, the DS1685QN-5+ is capable of providing reliable timekeeping and accurate time-stamping in a wide range of applications.

The DS1685QN-5+ features an embedded crystal oscillator that provides an extremely low power operation and its 3v lithium primary or 3v coin-cell secondary batteries provide an additional advantage to conserve power. Additionally, the DS1685QN-5+ includes a 15-bit counter and 12-bit watch crystal for a total of 8192 different time events, which can be programmed with a simple I2C/SPI message.
