Introduction

DS1804U-100+ is a digital potentiometer from Texas Instruments. It is an integrated variable resistor circuit device consisting of digital to analog converters and additional elements. Working Principle

The DS1804U-100+ consists of two identical monolithic devices with the same digital interface and on-chip EEPROM memory. One device is a digitally controlled potentiometer (DCP) and the other device is a digital ramp generator (DRG). Each device contains three terminals for connecting to external circuitry. The DCP has a digital input referred to as a "clock strobe" and two analog outputs, referred to as A and B. The DRG has two inputs and an output. When the clock strobe is enabled, data is transferred to the EEPROM which controls the resistance value of the DCP analog output. At the same time, the DRG is enabled and data is sent to the DRG inputs. The data is converted by the DRG into a ramp signal which is sent to the DCP’s B output and then to circuit ground. The A output of the DCP is the one that is adjustable and produces the desired resistance value of the desired resistance range. The DS1804U-100+ is an ideal precision digital potentiometer. Due to its digital interface, it is highly programmable and can be used to control the resistance in a wide variety of audio, power control and other applications.
