Data Acquisition - Digital Potentiometers is and important aspect of measuring, monitoring, and controlling data in integrated circuit (IC) design. The DS1856B-020+ is a fully integrated, low cost and low power “Digital Potentiometer” IC which makes it easily integrated with a variety of microcontrollers, LCDs, logic and analog circuits. This device is used for a wide range of data acquisition or signal conditioning tasks and can be used to accurately and rapidly adjust analog attributes of a compensated signal without manual adjustment.
The DS1856B-020+ is an 8-bit volume control/fine tuning device. Using the digital potentiometer feature, the user can set volume, gain, and other analog properties with accuracy and very high rate of speed, and with no manual adjustment required. This device is commonly used in audio players, headphone amplifiers, sound systems, sensors, digital audio systems, and in many other analog applications.
The DS1856B-020+ is a low power device with a wide operational range. It works with a voltage supply voltage range of 2.5V to 5.5V and requires a quiescent supply current of only 0.7µA. It also features an output range of 250µV to 10V and provides a maximum sense current of 800µA. The DS1856B-020+ integrates two different programmable impedance elements. The first one is a variable resistor that provides an analog variable gain from 0 dB to 15 dB with a resolution of 200 mV/step. The second is a variable capacitor that allows for an analog variable frequency with a resolution of 25 kHz per step. This device also features a built-in EEPROM which stores the programmed “Impedance lookup table” and provides a memory solution which is scalable in both resolution and steps.
In addition to the aforementioned variables, the device also provides a frequency generator, allowing the user to accurately control frequency components as well as other parameters within the application. This frequency generator is also another key feature of the device as it enables the user to easily change the tuning frequencies with greater accuracy and speed.
