The DS1859E-050 operates in three distinct modes - “digital linear”, “logarithmic” and “resistor ladder”. In logarithmic mode the output level follows an exponential law, increasing logarithmically with increasing resistance. Finally, resistor ladder mode, the device provides a resistive output which is stepped according to the binary inputs.

The DS1859E-050 is designed to accept two logic level inputs, UP/DOWN, and STEP which are used to control its operation. When the UP/DOWN pin is in the logic high state, the wiper setting increases. The rate of increase is determined by the logic level of the STEP input. If the STEP pin is in the logic high state, the rate of increase is much faster. If the UP/DOWN pin is in the logic low state, the wiper setting decreases. The rate of decrease is also determined by the logic level of the STEP input.

The DS1859E-050 device is suitable for a wide variety of data acquisition applications as well as adjustable gain /compensation circuitry. It can be used to control adjustable gain amplifiers, level sensors, active filtering, sigma-delta converters and digital-to-analog converters.
