<p>The Dallas Semiconductor DS2401 is a 1-Wire family integrated circuit primarily used for identification functions. As a part of the Specialized ICs, it has a wide application field and its working principle is also fairly straight forward and easy to understand.</p><p>The DS2401 functions as a silicon serial number, providing a globally unique 64-bit number in a standard 8-pin package. It is intended for use as a low-cost electronic registration number, replacing manual or laser engraved metal or plastic tags. In addition, it is also useful in low-cost rack security systems, asset tracking systems and inventory control systems.</p><p>The DS2401 is a single wire device, and can operate without the need of any other power or data lines. It is a simple device that communicates a permanently programmed silicon serial number to the outside world. The chip features an 8-pin DIP package, with a pinning compatible to drop-in replacements for other 8-bit parts and is small enough for a tight fit into small spaces. The single-wire interface and method allow convenient “daisy-chain” connections between multiple devices.</p> <p>The DS2401 transmits one 8-bit byte during communication. This first byte of data is a “family code” identifying the 1-Wire device. The second, third and fourth bytes are a 24-bit binary number, containing the chip’s unique ID code. The fifth and sixth bytes are a reserved section for information about the system and program device. The seventh and eighth bytes represent an 8-bit Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) value for the DS2401.</p><p>The DS2401 is safe to use in environments from -40°C to +85°C, and all communication protocols are immune to data line noise and noise-caused line glitching. The device also offers a low-cost, secure method of protecting individual devices, and supports a one-to-many connection. The 1-Wire interface allows devices to be ‘daisy-chained’ along a single communications line; the devices can be placed over several metres apart, using long lines and several DS2401 devices. As the DS2401 only uses a single interface, it can be placed in extremely small spaces, making it ideal for applications where very small components are required such as hand-held devices, wearable technology and implantable medical devices.</p><p>From a working principle point of view, the DS2401 is powered by a single signal line and does not require multiple power or clock lines. The signal line must provide a source of positive voltage and a ground return to complete the circuit. Data can be transmitted and received by providing a flow of alternating voltage levels from the source line to the ground return. A 0 volt level represents a “0” (logic low) and a high voltage level represents a “1” (logic high). The data rate for transmission of data can vary from 3.4 kbits/s to 16.3 kbits/s dependent upon the conditions of the communication environment.</p><p>In conclusion, the DS2401 is a low-cost serial ID with a low-cost, secure method of protecting multiple devices, making it an efficient choice in applications such as asset tracking, inventory control and rack security.
