Working principle of DS2404S-001

The DS2404S-001 RTC is based on a dedicated 32-bit embedded processor that operates at 1 MHz. The processor is designed to manage all of the time, date and other functions of the device. It stores the most significant parts of the time, date and various other settings in EEPROM memory chips, while the rest of the data is maintained in volatile RAM. This ensures that the device can quickly synchronise and determine the current time whenever it is resumed after a power outage.

The processor is also responsible for monitoring the battery voltage to ensure that it is within the acceptable levels. If the battery voltage drops to levels that are considered unsafe, the processor will automatically disable the battery backup in order to protect the data stored in EEPROM memory. The battery backup can also be disabled by an external command, if the user decides to do so. Additionally, the RTC can also be used to monitor environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and vibration.

As far as accuracy is concerned, the device is calibrated in the factory prior to shipment. The accuracy is then verified by comparing several different sources of time, such as external timing signals, atomic clocks and internet-based clocks. The results of these comparisons are logged so that the customer can see how accurate the device is before using it. The accuracy of the device can then be adjusted if required.
