The Quartz Crystal Substrate, made of quartz silica, is the resonator at the heart of the oscillator and is responsible for creating the precise frequency. The IC Oscillator chip encapsulates the quartz crystal in a well sealed package that holds the crystal resonator in a vacuum chamber. The electronic circuitry of the IC oscillator chip is responsible for the control and stability of the quartz crystal. The combination of these two components forms a shock-resistant, temperature compensated crystal oscillator that allows precise frequency control and stability in a wide range of operating temperatures.
