Working Principle

The DSC400-0444Q0009KI2 is a miniature quartz oscillator that is able to generate a wide range of frequency outputs. It is based on a Pierce oscillator circuit. The Pierce oscillator circuit is a combination of an amplifier and an LC network.In the Pierce oscillator circuit, a trans-conductance amplifier is used to ensure that the voltage across the tank circuit (the LC network) is zero. The amplifier is connected between the two terminals of the tank circuit. As the amplifier is an active component, it needs a DC power supply to function.The LC network in the oscillator is composed of the quartz crystal and around 10pF capacitors. The quartz crystal has a precisely controlled resonance frequency, allowing it to generate a very stable output frequency. The capacitors form a parallel resonance with the crystal, creating a high Q factor which gives a high frequency stability.The oscillator also contains a special programmable logic chip (PLC). This chip is used to control the oscillator’s output frequency by adjusting the capacitors. The frequency of the oscillator can be programmed by writing to the PLC’s internal registers. This allows the customer to tailor the oscillator to their specific requirements.
