Proximity sensors are devices utilized to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact. The sensing distance is usually short, ranging from a few millimeters up to several meters. Depending on the type of proximity sensor, the detection range is categorized as an electric field, a magnetic field, a capacitance field, or an optical field. Of these categories, the most common type is capacitance field. This type of sensor operates on the principle of detecting changes in electrical capacitance in the detection range when an object comes near, which is referred to as an E2E-C1C1-R application field.
The basic principle behind the E2E-C1C1-R application is to detect changes in the capacitance of the target object as it is moved in close proximity to the sensor. This is achieved by placing two or more conductive plates (E and R) at a fixed distance from each other (C1 and C2). The target object is placed between these plates, and when it is moved close to the plates, its capacitance changes (C1-C2). Depending on the size of the object, its capacitance will change. When this occurs, a signal is generated and detected by the sensor which in turn activates a switching mechanism to stop the movement of the target object.
In addition to the switching mechanism, the E2E-C1C1-R application can also be used for sensing vibrational changes in the target object. This is accomplished by attaching a piezoelectric crystal on the target object and connecting it to the two plates of the capacitor. As the object vibrates, the crystal will generate a voltage that is then detected by the sensor, which in turn activates the switching mechanism to stop the movement of the target object. By attaching the piezoelectric crystal to the target object, the sensor can sense changes in its vibrational as well as static properties.
