Proximity Sensors are sensors that detect a presence or absence of an object without making contact. The E2E-X8MD1S is a series of such sensors that belong to Omron\'s top-of-the-line E2E Long Life Proximity Sensors. These short-distance sensors have a detection range of between 5 and 25 millimeters, making them ideal for closely monitoring objects. Additionally, their high sensitivity makes them suitable for detecting small and light objects with a good degree of accuracy.

The E2E-X8MD1S offers a stainless steel housing with a diverse range of cable lengths of up to 10m, making them versatile for a number of applications. These sensors use the "transistor output" principle. This means that a transistor is installed inside the device and generates a current at the time of detecting an object. When no object is detected, the current is interrupted. The output reaction time when used in its default configuration is very fast- just 10 milliseconds. Reversing the polarities will cause a delay of 20 milliseconds.

E2E-X8MD1S is powered by a 12-24 VDC voltage, and its respective current consumption is a mere 4 mA. Its protection class is rated at IP67, meaning that it implements a high degree of protection from dust and water. Furthermore, it has the ability to operate in high temperatures of up to 65 degrees Celsius as well as a wide ambient temperature operation range of -25 to +55 Degrees Celsius.

The sensor is comprised of 3 main parts – the housing, the electronics portion and the cable. The housing part serves the purpose of providing protection to the electronics from external conditions, such as dust or water. It is electropolished stainless steel with a silver-dog finish for additional protection.

The electronics portion is the main component that is responsible for the detection of the object. It is comprised of an LED light source, a photoelectric transistor receiver and a microprocessor that serves the purpose of connecting the two together. The LED light source is responsible for emitting the infrared light that is necessary for the detection of the object, while the photoelectric transistor receiver measures the signal caused by the reflection of the object.

The cable part of the sensor consists of two wires – one for powering the sensor and the other for communication. It also includes a shield that prevents any outside elements from interfering with the signal sent by the transmitter and receiver.
