The EE-SX488-P5 is an optical Interrupter/Photo Coupler designed for signal transmission between two separate circuits with an isolation voltage of 2,500 V min.The EE-SX488-P5 is a photo interrupter/ slot type photo coupler with a logic output that is ideal for detecting slot dimensions of 3mm to 4mm in width. The device consists of an emitter LED optically coupled to a photodetector, IC. It has a wide variety of applications ranging from factory automation systems to safety and security applications, CD/DVD drives, medical equipment and other industrial applications.The core of the EE-SX488-P5 is the optical coupler which is used to convert electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa. It consists of two parts, the LED emitter and the Photodetector IC. The LED emitter generates light which gets detected by the photodetector IC. When the LED emitter is on, the photodetector IC conducts current through its output pin and the output of the photointerrupter is ‘1’. When the LED is off, the photodetector IC does not conduct current and the output of the photointerrupter is ‘0’. The LED emits infrared light which is detected by the photodetector IC. The infrared light is blocked by any object placed between the LED and the photodetector IC and the EE-SX488-P5 will provide an output pin with a logic ‘0’.The EE-SX488-P5 can be used in many different application areas such as in CD/DVD drives, industrial automation systems, medical instruments, and robotics. It is commonly used in CD/DVD drives to detect paper clips which are placed in the disc’s spindle hole which discards the disc from spinning. The EE-SX488-P5 is also used in industrial automation systems to detect slot dimensions such as width in a process to switch off/on devices. It is also used in medical instruments to detect various materials or objects such as gloves or syringes which pass in front of the device.
