Photosensitivity is obtained through the changes in the intensity of the light which passes through a gap in the waveguide. The EE-SX674R is a logic output photointerrupter.

The principle of operation of the EE-SX674R is simple. It operates in a polarized light field. When an object passes through the slot, light is reflected off the object and is detected by the device. The reflected light causes the EE-SX674R to output a logic-level digital signal. The output is either high (in phase with the input) or low (reverse phase from the input). This output is then used as an input signal in an automation system.
The applications of EE-SX674R include paper feed control, machine counting, gate release, machine production monitoring, bar code readers, etc. In paper feed control, the EE-SX674R is used to detect the presence of a sheet of paper as it passes through the slot. The device then triggers the next phase of the paper feed process. In counting applications, the EE-SX674R is used as a sensor to count objects as they pass through the slot. In a gate release system, the EE-SX674R detects the movement of a gate and expands or retracts the gate as required.
