The EE-SX872 slot-type photointerrupter is an optical sensor capable of recognizing a wide variety of shapes moving at up to 300m/s. It is a high-speed, high-precision device which amplifies the on or off states of inputs and outputs logic signals based on the position or edging of material passing through the slot-type sensor.

The EE-SX872 has its greatest application in areas that require high-precision sensing, such as: pick and place machines; high-speed printing machines, including color separator printing systems; industrial robots; servo motors; and photoelectric barriers.

The working principle of the EE-SX872 is based on a light source, typically an infrared light-emitting diode (LED) which transmits a beam of light to an adjacent phototransistor. These are mounted in a narrow slot-type sensor. When material moves through the slot, the LED illuminates the object at one or more points, depending on the material’s color and size. This causes the phototransistor to produce an electrical output which is relayed to the device\'s processor.

The processor then interprets the input in terms of the on/off state of the material which is then outputted as a logic signal. This digital output is used to control the movement of motors, open and close valves, measure the distance of objects in motion, or indicate the presence or absence of objects.

The EE-SX872 also provides numerous selections of hysteresis and current output levels, which can be set independently for each output channel. This makes it easier to control the current sensing. Other features of the EE-SX872 include: a selectable sensitivity based on the type of material passing through the slot; an adjustable delay time, which is beneficial when dealing with materials of varying sizes and thicknesses; and low power consumption.
