Thyristors are semiconductor devices which are derivatives of transistors but are fundamentally very different. Unlike transistors, thyristors do not use an input signal to control a signal; instead, they rely on the internal charge to remain switched on. As thyristors are in essence a two terminal device, they can be used as a switch, or as a voltage or current control device. Additionally, they can also be used in combinations, such as in thyristor-based modules.

The SCR, or silicon controlled rectifier, is a type of thyristor, and was one of the earliest examples of thyristor technology. SCRs have three terminals, with the third terminal being called the ‘gate’, which is typically connected to a control signal. When the control signal is sent to the gate, the SCR is switched on and can remain in that state until the control signal is removed. SCRs are used extensively in power control and have been used in this manner since their initial development.
