Thyristors are semiconductor devices which are derivatives of transistors but are fundamentally very different. Unlike transistors, thyristors do not use an input signal to control a signal; instead, they rely on the internal charge to remain switched on. As thyristors are in essence a two terminal device, they can be used as a switch, or as a voltage or current control device. Additionally, they can also be used in combinations, such as in thyristor-based modules.
The SCR, or silicon controlled rectifier, is a type of thyristor, and was one of the earliest examples of thyristor technology. SCRs have three terminals, with the third terminal being called the ‘gate’, which is typically connected to a control signal.
