The EFR32BG14P632F256IM48-BR transceiver IC is one of the most popular RF integrated circuits (ICs). It offers one of the best in class performance in terms of radio frequency (RF) communication, be it short or long range, by allowing high speed data transmission and reception. It is ideally suited for ultra-low power and low data rateRF applications, such as wireless sensor nodes, keyless entry systems, monitoring devices, remote control devices, and voice control systems.

This RF transceiver IC is based on the Silicon Labs’ EFR32BG14P632F256IM48-BR chip, which is capable of Bluetooth low energy (BLE) as well as other narrow band communication protocols. The device employs a very small form factor (3.4x4mm) and it operates between 2.4GHz and 2.5GHz frequency. It provides a maximum link budget of -38dBm and has a maximum data rate of 1Mbps. It also features an on-board power amplifier, direct current/direct current (DC/DC) converter, low noise amplifier, and a low power filter.

The primary application of the EFR32BG14P632F256IM48-BR is in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices that require short-range wireless communication, such as home automation, industrial and medical devices, wearables, and mobile devices. It is designed for deployment as a stand-alone device or as part of a larger system on chip (SoC) solution. It is also suitable for applications requiring low power consumption as it consumes only 144mA when transmitting and 37mA when in standby.

The working and the core functionality of the EFR32BG14P632F256IM48-BR transceiver IC is based on a communication stack that operates two-way communication between a master and a slave and/or multiple slaves. The stack comprises of a physical (PHY) layer, a link layer and a host layer, with the PHY being responsible for managing and transmitting the radio signal, while the link layer is used for data communication. The host layer manages the upper-level application layer, allowing communication between the radio device and the wireless device application.

The transceiver IC works by first receiving a radio signal from the master device, which is then modulated into logic 1’s and 0’s by the baseband processor. These logic signals are transferred to the host processor where the protocol stack interprets the information. The information is then transferred to the application layer. The application layer goes back through the protocol and baseband stack, which then modulates the logical signal into the radio frequency signal which is again transmitted by the radio module.

The EFR32BG14P632F256IM48-BR was developed for Bluetooth low energy applications, however, it can also be used for other low-power RF communications. It is an ideal solution for a wide range of wireless communication applications, providing excellent power efficiency and robust performance.
