The EK54 is an Application Field Evaluation Kit and "toolbox" of components specifically designed for simulation, evaluation and experimentation of the families of op amps that are offered by Burr-Brown. This powerful set of components allows for quick validation of a wide variety of analog and digital design parameters for a given op amp. It can save engineers considerable time in the laboratory by greatly reducing the part and time requirements in the design process.
EK54 is comprised of two components: the Programmable Op-Amp Loadboard (POL) and the Kit Board. The POL is designed as a “breadboarding” platform that is capable of providing multiple prototyping steps for developing and testing the functionality of a project using a single module. The Kit Board contains the circuitry to construct, simulate, and evaluate an entire range of amplifiers and comparators.
The Programmable Op-Amp Loadboard (POL) includes a variety of simulations such as gain and offset error, power supply rejection, common mode rejection, input offset conductance, phase-margin, slew-rate, output swing/offset, and thermal drift. The POL supports two separate signal amplifiers/comparators channels, each programmable for a different op-amp topology. This allows the user to compare different families of amplifiers. The POL also includes current and voltage sources, programmable analog voltage references, and a variety of external analog blocks such as sample and hold, voltage follower, current source buffers, and integrators.
The Kit Board contains the circuitry needed to construct, simulate and evaluate an entire range of amplifiers and comparators. It provides a series of test points and instrumentation circuitry to measure gains, frequencies, offsets, and other parameters associated with various amplifier designs. Additionally, it includes several automated features that enable quick and easy experimentation. For instance, the kit allows the user to step between different configurations such as unity-gain or gain-of-10 to evaluate the performance of various amplifier circuits. Also, it includes a programmable control system for the selection of test modes (DC, AC, phase-margin, slew-rate, input resistance) as well as input signals’ (sine wave, square wave, triangle wave, etc.) for the user’s experimentation.
The EK54 enables quicker prototyping and verification of amplifiers and comparators, thus reducing the time spent in the lab. It can also help identify problems with a design by providing detailed insight into the performance of different components. Automated features, such as the ability to switch between different configurations and input signals, are an extra benefit, as they can speed up the design process. The variety of tests and simulations that can be run with the EK54 make it a powerful tool for any designer.
