Optoisolators are devices used to electrically isolate two circuits. Isolation is generally used to prevent a high voltage circuit from interfering with a low voltage signal circuit. The EL1012(TA)-G comprises of an infrared LED (Light Emitting Diode) and a photovoltaic output transistor optically coupled in an 8-pin dual-in-line package.
The EL1012(TA)-G is designed to provide the same reliable performance as a general photovoltaic optoisolators without the added cost of an extrinsic detectors and detectors. It works by using a beam of light, generated by the LED, to control the current in the photovoltaic output transistor. This transistor can be either an NPN or PNP type, depending on the application.
When the LED in the EL1012(TA)-G is off, there is no current flow through the transistor because the semiconductor junction made between the two devices is in an open configuration (No voltage is applied). When the LED is turned on, a current flow through the transistor is established and a voltage is applied to the collector. The collector voltage can be used to control the current in the transistor and thus the current flow through the device is regulated.
The EL1012(TA)-G photovoltaic optoisolator is suitable for many applications, due to its reliable performance at both low and high voltage levels. It is most commonly used for digital interface applications, including voltage controllers, serial ports, analogue-to-digital converters, remote sensing circuits, motor control circuits and high voltage AC/DC power supplies.
