EL1012-VG Application Field and Working Principle

Optoisolators are electronic components, which are used to transfer signals between two circuits isolating them electrically. An optoisolator consists of a light emitting diode (LED) and a photodetector. They are primarily used for signal isolation between one circuit and another for signal conditioning, protection, and noise reduction. The optoisolator model EL1012-VG belongs to the category of optoisolators known as transistor, photovoltaic output.

Principle of Operation

The EL1012-VG optoisolator consists of an input infrared (IR) LED, a collector phototransistor, and two resistors R1 (collector bias) and R2 (collector current limit). When the input voltage to the LED increases, it produces infrared photons, which are activated when they impinge on the collector phototransistor. This produces current flow through R2, which improves the base-collector current gain of collector phototransistor, thus activating the output transistor of the optoisolator. In this way, the optoisolator is able to transfer the electrical signals between two circuits maintaining electrical isolation.

Application Field

The EL1012-VG optoisolator, due to its ability to provide direct signal isolation between two circuits, finds wide applications from telecom to industrial. In the telecom space, its use is mainly in global ISDN systems and modems. In industrial control, it can be used to activate solenoids, relays, and other low-leakage current devices, and for switching circuits and remote sensing. It also finds use in the automotive sector for anti-theft systems and remote door locks.
