Optoisolators are devices that electrically isolate a signal by modulating it optically. The EL2531 is a family of optoisolator chips belonging to the transistor, photovoltaic output class. Consequently, it operates by creating a photovoltage which is created when light energy from an internal LED source is used to excite two external diodes.

When an electrical signal is fed into the optoisolator, the internal LED is fired off which produces light of a specific wavelength. This light then travels through the two external diodes which are tuned to allow only the specific wavelength of the LED to pass through. When the diodes receive the light, they generate a large photocurrent which is then fed into the voltage control rail. This photocurrent produces an amplified output voltage that is proportional to the input signal.

The EL2531 has the advantage of providing true electrical isolation between the input and output ports. This allows for a much higher signal integrity. At the same time, due to the use of circuitry, the EL2531 also has an operating voltage range from 3.5V to 24V. This allows the optoisolator to cover a wide range of applications. It is suitable for use in low to mid-power electronics items such as air conditioners, TVs, washing machines and other similar products.

The EL2531 supports a range of modulation frequencies up to 30Mhz. This ensures that the optoisolator can handle high-speed signals efficiently. The EL2531 has an operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C and a storage temperature range of -50°C to 150°C.
