Optoisolators, or optocouplers, are photosensitive semiconductor devices that provide a high degree of electrical insulation between input circuits and output circuits. An optoisolator, such as the EL3021S1(TA)-V, can be specifically divided into two main sections: a LED (Light Emitting Diode) located in a photoreceptive element that transfers current from one section to another. When the LED is activated, the photoreceptive element, typically a triac or a transistor, conducts electricity from the input side to the output side, which can then be used to activate an electrical load.

Application Field

The EL3021S1(TA)-V optoisolator has found its usage in minimizing electrical interference between two circuits. Its wide range of applications includes mains isolation, contactless relays, signal interfacing, high-speed logic systems and motor speed control.

Normally, when electronic circuits in an appliance are powered from alternating current (AC) mains, such as 230V AC in Europe, they will experience some degree of electrical noise from nearby sources. This noise will induce voltage distortions and result in false readings in the appliance’s microcontroller. By using an optoisolator, such as the EL3021S1(TA)-V, between the AC mains and the electronic circuits, these distortions will be all but eliminated. As voltage spikes will not be conducted from the mains circuits to the low-voltage electronics, the appliance’s microcontroller will consequently have clean and accurate data.

Working Principle

The optoisolator works by using the LED side to “trigger” the TRIAC side. When forward voltage is applied to the LED side pins, the LED turns on. The LED’s light is then directed at the TRACT side, which is triggered in turn, allowing current to flow from its output pin. This current can then be used to drive any type of electrical load, such as a fan, motor, or any other electrical device.

The design of the EL3021S1(TA)-V optoisolator allows LED-TRIAC triggering through the three-pin DC connector. The two terminal pins are connected directly to the DC power source, while the middle pin functions both as input voltage (VI) and output voltage (VO). When power is applied to the terminal pins, it is also applied to the middle pin, and the LED turns on as a result. The LED’s light is then conducted through the TRIAC’s optical-sensitive element, which triggers the output current on the same middle pin.

The EL3021S1(TA)-V is compatible with a wide range of switching speeds. Its peak blocking voltage is at 600V and its maximum output current at 50mA. It utilizes single 5V to 24V DC voltage for powering, with operating temperature range of -40C to +85C, and its environmental resistance to shocks, vibrations and humidity is excellent.
