This is necessary when two circuits must be connected that are at very different potentials, such as mains power and low-voltage controller machinery, or when one circuit needs to be electrically isolated from the other. The optical isolator works on the principle of transferring the control signal between two circuits across an optical barrier, thus completely isolating the two sections from each other. The EL3H7(D)(TA)-VG is a Photovoltaic Output Optoisolator, meaning that its output transistor is designed to switch high power loads like AC or DC motors, heaters, and other AC or DC sources. This is done by using a light signal, generated by a light emitting diode (LED) at the input side of the optoisolator, to activate its output side transistor.The EL3H7(D)(TA)-VG consists of two parts - the input side and the output side. The input side consists of a light emitting diode, usually a gallium arsenide LED, which is used as the optical signal source. The output side of the optoisolator contains a photo sensitive transistor.
