Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic OutputOptoisolators are electronic components designed to provide electrical isolation between two parts of a circuit. They are commonly used to provide isolation between higher and lower voltage levels, as well as between two circuits that must not be electrically connected. The optoisolator is usually composed of two parts: an LED, and a bridge rectifier or phototransistor.The ELD 217 (TA) is an optoisolator designed specifically for applications where a logic level digital output is required from a photvoltaic output. It is a 4-pin device which consists of a LED output coupled to a Schottky phototransistor with a breakdown voltage between 1.5 and 12 volts. The Schottky phototransistor acts as both a photodetector and a high-speed, high-gain switch, with a very low input current. The ELD 217 (TA) has a wide range of applications including; linear optocouplers, audio filtering, communications, and low-noise logic applications.The working principle of the optoisolator is based upon the photovoltaic effect. This is the process in which photons of light absorbed by a semiconductor material cause the generation of an electric current. The LED, when illuminated, produces photons which are absorbed by the phototransistor. When sufficient current has been generated by the phototransistor it triggers into conduction and switches the output to the logic level. This method of electrical isolation is much more reliable than traditional methods as it does not utilize any electrical contacts that can become corroded or worn over time.In order to use the ELD 217 (TA) optoisolator effectively, it is important to note that the LED must be supplied with a sufficient current to ensure correct operation. If the LED is not operated at the correct current, then it will not produce enough light and the output of the optoisolator will be unreliable. The LED is usually driven by a current source circuit or a resistor, depending on the particular application.The ELD 217 (TA) optoisolator is also available in a 5-pin package, offering additional features such as an internal resistor for protecting the phototransistor from overvoltage and device-to-device matching.
