Optoisolators have been used for a wide variety of digital, analog, and industrial applications since their introduction over four decades ago. They are known as isolators, optically coupled isolators, optical isolators, or optical–electrical isolators. The ELM3022 are common optoisolators with triac, SCR output, often used for high voltage ac switching applications.

The ELM3022 optoisolator is a three terminal device consisting of a GaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a silicon bilateral triac switch. The device will switch .25 Amperes AC current at 250Volt AC/DC. ELM3022 optoisolators have a peak blocking voltage of 600Vrms and repetition rate of 400Hz. An advantage of this device is that the LED which supplies the optical output can be driven with either DC or AC current. The LED also has wide angle viewing, making it suitable for use in visible light applications. ELM3022 has an internal current limiting resistor that provides current protection for the LED and an external photo transistor terminal which can be used to monitor the status of the LED. The ELM3022 also has a floating lead which is connected to the SCR side of the device and can be used to provide isolated control of the SCR.
