The rotation of the code wheel is detected when an adjacent photo-sensitive diode senses a change in the received light and sends a signal to the card reader. This signal is interpreted by the microcontroller, and a certain number of pulses is generated corresponding to the angle of rotation.

Apart from rotation detection, the EN11-VNM1BF15 encoder is also equipped with a direction-detection feature, which allows it to determine the direction in which the code wheel is rotating. This feature is enabled by two pairs of photo-sensitive diodes on the top layer of the photodetector array. The first pair of diodes detects the direction of rotation, while the second pair detects the angular direction of rotation.
