The EPC9102 is a highly integrated, off-line, switched-mode power supply (SMPS) evaluation board that enables designers to quickly evaluate and characterize the design and performance of the EPC9102 integrated circuit. The evaluation board is designed to provide a complete set of features that are necessary to evaluate both the switching and linear characteristics of the device. This includes a wide selection of input voltages, an interchangeable power transformer for the primary side, and standard probe points for monitoring the secondary side. The board also provides a number of external connections for controlling the device such as an enable input for the primary and secondary pathways and a temperature compensation signal.
The EPC9102 is designed to regulate load currents greater than a few milliamps. This is made possible by the inclusion of a low voltage, low resistance power switch on the primary side. The power switch is used to regulate the current flowing through the transfer inductor on the primary side, thereby controlling the output voltage. The switch also provides an enabling signal which is used to control the operation of the secondary side to ensure that it is supplied with the correct input voltage. The secondary side is also protected by a short-circuit protection circuit which monitors current and will shut down the device if the current exceeds a certain threshold.
The input voltage of the EPC9102 is adjustable using the onboard voltage selector. This voltage selector can be set to any voltage range from 16V to 210V. The input voltage of the device also includes an over-voltage protection circuit which monitors the incoming voltage and will shut down the device if the voltage is outside the specified range. This ensures safe operation even in situations where the input voltage is higher than the specified range.
In order to limit the required start-up current, the EPC9102 includes an integrated start-up circuit. This start-up circuit is used to reduce the current surge at power up and also to provide an adjustable pre-regulation point for the device. This pre-regulation point can be adjusted externally to provide any voltage between 4V and 40V. The start-up circuit also contains a thermal protection circuit which will shut down the device if the internal temperature exceeds a certain threshold.
The output voltage of the EPC9102 is adjustable using the onboard voltage selector. This voltage selector can be set to any voltage range between 0V and 30V. The output voltage is then monitored by the output voltage sensing circuit which monitors the voltage level and will shut down the device if this level exceeds an adjustable limit. The device also contains an integrated over-voltage protection circuit which will shut down the device if the secondary output voltage exceeds an adjustable limit.
