The working principle of ERM15A72 DC to DC converter is based on the concepts of buck-boost converter. A buck-boost converter is an electrical circuit with DC input and output, which increases or decreases the output voltage as per the requirement. In buck-boost converters, the output voltage can be either higher or lower than the input voltage depending upon the ratio between the input and output voltage. It works on the principles of two power stages, namely the buck and the boost.

The “Buck” stage works when the output voltage is lower than the input voltage. In this stage, the switch S1 is closed and power is drawn from the input side and fed to the inductor coil. Upon switching, the current stored in the inductor rises and forms a peak, which then further flows through the diode D1 to the output capacitor. When this electron surge stops due to the capacitance of the capacitor, the switch S1 closes and the cycle starts again.

The “Boost” stage works when the output voltage is higher than the input voltage. In this stage, the switch S2 is closed and power is drawn from the input side and fed to the inductor coil. This time, the current stored in the inductor flows through the diode D2 to the output capacitor. When the electron surge stops due to the capacitance of the capacitor, the switch S2 closes and the cycle starts all over again.
