RF Antennas Monopole Antennas

A monopole antenna is the basic form of a long wire antenna, where one terminal is connected to the ground and the other acts as the radiating element that is connected to the central feed point. It is also known as half-wave dipole antenna, which are fundamentally half-wave radiators with a single-terminal actively radiating antenna as compared to the traditional dipole antenna where there are two active terminals. The monopole antenna is usually designed by manufacturing two quarter-wave sections as vertical stubs below the feed point, and in some cases, a top-hat capacitive loading is also added.

Working Principle of EXS155SFU

The EXS155SFU is a small NFC monopole antenna operating in the 13.56 MHz band. Its fundamental working principle is based on the theory of electromagnetism and the Faraday effect, where the antenna is used to broadcast electromagnetic radiation in the form of an oscillating electric field. This oscillation in turn generates a directional wave that propagates from the antenna and is radiated to its surroundings. The frequency or the amount of oscillation that can be achieved is known as the radiation strength of the antenna, which is usually controlled through the tuning of the antenna impedance. The antenna is basically tuned to resonance in order to achieve maximum radiation strength and efficiency. For the EXS155SFU, it is tuned to the 13.56 MHz frequency in conjunction with proper match of the input impedance of the antenna which helps in achieving maximum radiation strength. As the frequency is increased, the antenna impedance changes and this results in the need to readjust the settings to ensure maximum radiation strength.
