Film capacitors are electro-magnetic components capable of storing energy. They are mainly used in high-frequency, ultra-high-frequency, and radio frequency applications. Unlike ceramic capacitors where the polarization is the basis for capacitance, film capacitors, in general, rely on dielectrics of thin plastic film, with the prefix "P" in the designation. Generally speaking, film type capacitors can be divided into metallized film capacitors and wound film capacitors.
F17102101030 is a metallized film capacitor which is composed of three parts — an organic film, a metal electrode, and an epoxy resin. The capacitor consists of a very thin polyolefin film as its dielectric. This film can range in thickness from 0.00067mm to 0.01mm. A thin coating of metal aluminum, which has low resistance and high conductivity, is evaporated on both sides of the dielectric and function as the electrodes. In order to keep the metal coating intact, layers of epoxy resin are applied on both sides of the film.
The breadth of applications for F17102101030 metallized film capacitors is vast since it offers high stability, high dielectric strength, coupled with high ripple current withstand and long-term reliability even under extreme conditions of heat and cold. Examples of applications include but are not limited to power supply, automotive computers, in-vacuum, industrial motor, TV, and general electronic equipment.
In terms of working principle, as with other capacitors, a film capacitor generates capacitance from two metal electrodes separated by a dielectric material. When a DC voltage is applied to the terminals of the capacitor, the metal layer creates an electric field in the dielectric material that stores the electrical energy in the form of electrical potential energy. When a current passes through the terminals, the energy is discharged and stored again when the current ceases.
Compared with other types of capacitors, film capacitors offer wide temperature ranges, low dielectric absorption, and better dielectric stability. Furthermore, film capacitors possess low inductance, high frequency characteristics, and excellent current capacity. Because of these superior characteristics, film capacitors are ideal for applications in signal processing and power supply management.
