On the reverse side, a tantalum cathode is formed using a thin-film conductive layer. A thin layer of solid electrolyte is applied over the cathode and the two layers are separated with a thin insulating layer to form the capacitor.

The working principle of a tantalum capacitor is based on the principles of electrochemical double layer (EDLC) capacitors. The EDLC consists of two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, separated by a dielectric material. When a voltage is applied across the two electrodes, the electrons move from the anode to the cathode, resulting in the build-up of electrical charge. The capacitance is related to the thickness of the dielectric material and the area of the electrodes. A tantalum capacitor has a high capacitance-to-size ratio compared to other types of capacitors.
