FAN1581T is an integrated CMOS linear voltage regulator and low RDS(ON) MOSFET/PNP current-limited power switch, suitable for automotive and other harsh environments applications. It functions as an adjustable low dropout (LDO) linear regulator and provides low quiescent current. The linear regulator compliant with AEC-Q100 and power switch compliant with ISO7637-3 and ECE regulation R10 from AVX Corporation.

The linear regulator portion of this chip is composed of a PNP transistor for current limit, a voltage reference and an error amplifier. It has PUSH-PULL output drivers for up to 2A peak of output current. The input voltage range is from 4.5V to 40V, and output voltage range from 0.6V to 27.5V. The output voltage is regulated to +/-2% tolerance. In addition, the FAN1581T also provides overvoltage, current protection and over temperature protection features.

The PNP transistor current limit is manufactured using low on-resistance NPN process. The PNP transistor can hold very low RDS(ON) which ensures low voltage drop over the MOSFET. Its low quiescent current can further extend the battery life of the system. The regulator also has a thermal shutdown feature that can shut down the output when the junction temperature exceeds 165°C.

The chip typically operates in two modes, linear and pulse width modulation (PWM). In linear mode, the chip operates in continuous conduction mode and the output voltage is regulated by controlling the current through the regulator’s pass element. In PWM mode, a fixed frequency oscillator is used to modulate the pass element’s current. This results in more efficient regulation but produces a larger output voltage ripple than the linear mode.
