FBMOV510M is a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) that is part of a category of devices known as metal-oxide varistors (MOVs). MOVs protect sensitive electronic components from voltage spikes by limiting the voltage applied across them. FBMOV510M, in particular, is well-suited for automotive systems, industrial control and power management systems, and aerospace and defense radios.

When faced with transients, MOVs are designed to limit the voltage applied to a protected component to that of its breakdown voltage, and absorb the excess energy. FBMOV510M is equipped with ceramic- and lead-filled plated terminals, which make it highly resistant to thermal and mechanical shock and vibration. It also allows for superior thermal conductivity and electrical insulation.

The FBMOV510M contains an MOV die mounted in a hermetically sealed banded ceramic housing, which provides the greatest type of protection against physically damaging forces. The die is composed of zinc oxide grains held together with an epoxy resin binder. The charging resistance is either a metal-oxide-resistor or an external device. The FBMOV510M is equipped with the latter, a low resistance (typically 10 Ω to 25 Ω), wire-wound film capacitor.

It is designed to be connected between the data line and the power line of the protected circuit to provide a soft, adjustable current limitation. The FBMOV510M is also capable of absorbing transients in both directions, thus protecting the circuit it is connected to from any voltage surges. The FBMOV510M has a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, and a long operational life span of thousands of hours.

When a surge voltage reaches above the device\'s breakdown voltage, the FBMOV510M MOV diverts the current away from vulnerable components, protecting the entire circuit. As the current passes through the copper chord, the inductance of the wire helps to form a low pass filter, further limiting the potential to cause interference as the voltage spills over into the protected circuit.

The FBMOV510M also boasts a low peak pulse power rating of 1200 Watts for 10/1000μs with a 1.2/50 μs waveform, allowing it to withstand even severe voltage transients. Furthermore, the device is highly cost effective and is available in a wide variety of voltage and power ratings, making it suitable for almost any application.
