Oscillators

Oscillators are electrical circuits, which generate periodic signals. The signals can be in the form of voltage or current, an example of the former is sine wave based oscillators (also called sinusoidal oscillators), or a pulse-wave based oscillator. A sinusoidal oscillator is the most commonly used oscillator, and is used in a variety of electronic applications, e.g. radio communications, radar, and in other fields such as medical imaging and industrial process control applications. At the same time, pulse-wave based oscillators can be used for a variety of applications, e.g. navigation and remote sensing.

FN3700009 Application Field and Working Principle

The FN3700009 (FN37) is an oscillator-based analog-to-digital converter (ADC) used for a variety of applications ranging from consumer electronics to industrial and military systems. It supports a wide range of input frequencies ranging from DC (direct current) up to 1 Megahertz (MHz) and supports an output resolution of 16-bit. The device is capable of sampling at a rate of up to 1MHz, in sync with the input signal frequency and maintaining a low power consumption level of 8mA. It also utilizes a chopper stabilization technique which eliminates the necessity of using an external stabilization circuit.

The FN37 uses a sine-wave based oscillator to generate a periodic signal. The oscillator is based on a Fundamental mode Colpitts oscillator and uses a LVPECL (low-voltage positive-emitter-coupled logic) output to provide a signal with the necessary voltage and current swing required for the ADC. An enable input to the oscillator is used to prevent the oscillator from operating if it not needed. By connecting the enable input to Vcc, the oscillator is enabled and it begins to oscillate. The frequency of the oscillator is determined by the combination of the inductance of the tuned inductor and the capacitance of the capacitors in the Colpitts configuration. The oscillator also incorporates a secondary waveform modulation circuit which modulates a copy of the output to lower its average amplitude. This additional modulation helps to reduce clock feedthrough in the analog-to-digital converter.

The signal generated by the oscillator is then passed to the ADC, which samples it at the rate of the input frequency, converting the signal to a digital equivalent. This digital output is then passed to the host device for further processing. With its wide operating frequency range and resolution of 16-bit, the FN37 is ideal for a variety of applications, such as image and audio processing, as well as digital communication systems.
